Sonia
was born in Cape Town in 1960. She
matriculated in Pretoria and studied at
the
University of Potchefstroom for a
BA
degree in Communication. After graduating she worked for National Press
for two years, then studied nursing and specialised in intensive care
nursing. She worked in intensive care units in Tygerberg and Paarl over
the next 14 years, painting as a release from the stressful work.
Wanting
to further develop her art, she studied watercolour painting in her free
time with Johan Coetzee. After moving to
Port Elizabeth
in 1998 she trained in oil painting under Rina de Wet, Duncan Stuart and
Nonnie Roodt. Her debut exhibition was in 2001 when she organized a
large exhibition for 20 local artists. Her works have been exhibited in
Port Elizabeth (Cuyler Gallery, Montage Gallery, Keith John's Gallery,
NMMM Gallery, Kuhne Boekkooi Gallery), and in galleries in Kleinmond,
Strand, Swellendam and Nieu Bethesda. Her first solo exhibition was held
in May 2005. Sonia's work is versatile, bold, very colourful and usually
very large. She has been painting full-time since January 2003. Sonia
wishes her paintings to be understood and enjoyed by everyone, to bring
peace and joy to their owners, adding beauty and colour to their homes.
Sonia is
married, has one son and lives in
Port Elizabeth, South Africa.
